The Department of Religious Studies is proud to offer a Language Certificate to recognize high-achieving students who demonstrate proficiency in a department language. This certificate acknowledges successful completion of a two-year language sequence offered through the Religious Studies Department at UCSB.

Currently, students can earn the certificate by completing the full Arabic or Persian language sequence.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Language Certificate, students must complete six quarters of language study in either the Arabic (RG ST 10A-F) or Persian (RG ST 58A-D & RG ST 158E-F) sequence, and all courses must be taken at UCSB. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their chosen sequence.  Additionally, the final two quarters must be taken for a letter grade.

The Language Certificate is only available to students who have completed all 6 quarters of their sequence at UCSB. This Certificate is not available to students who have tested out of or waived a language course.

Earning the Certificate

Students can nominate themselves here. Students are encouraged to nominate themselves while they are still completing the series, even if they have not yet met the requirements. Students may nominate themselves at any point before the annual spring deadline to declare candidacy. Students who successfully self-nominate and meet all eligibility requirements will be formally recognized at the Religious Studies Department's End of Year Awards.
