“Paul and Roman Imperial Theology”

John Dominic Crossan, Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies, DePaul University

When Jesus was born, Caesar the Augustus was already divine, the Son of God, the Lord, the Savior of the World, and the Redeemer from Sin. What different meaning and divergent content allowed Paul to take those titles from an imperial ruler on the Palatine Hill in Rome and give them instead to a Jewish peasant from the Nazareth Ridge in Galilee?

John Dominic Crossan, Doctor of Divinity, St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, Ireland, is an Irish-American biblical scholar with post-doctoral diplomas in exegesis from Rome’s Pontifical Biblical Institute and in archeology from Jerusalem’s École Biblique. He has been a mendicant friar and a Catholic priest, a Co-Chair of the Jesus Seminar, and a President of the Society of Biblical Literature.
