Hispanic Churches in American Public Life The department is host to the coordinating office for the Hispanic Churches in American Public Life Project, a three-year study supported by a $1.3 million grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts. The project seeks to examine the impact of Catholic, Pentecostal, mainline Protestant, Evangelical and new religious communities on civic engagement in politics, education, business, and social programs in Latino communities. Key questions include: To what extent, and how, do Latino religious communities exert influence in the public arena? How does this impact differ according to regional, gender, religious, class, and ethnic group differences? Aside from national surveys and field research in many communities across the country, the project will publish an anthology and a monograph, and disseminate the research findings in scholarly and public venues via publications, a website, and conferences. Father Virgilio Elizondo and Dr. Jesse Miranda are the principal investigators. Dr. Gaston Espinosa is the Project Director. Two UCSB students serve as research assistants to the project.
