from the Chair The study of religion at UCSB is an exciting intellectual endeavor -- cross-cultural in content and multidisciplinary in approach. Ever since the department was organized in 1964, it has sought to engage the critical issues relating to religion in its many facets: historical, textual, cultural, sociological, experiential, and philosophical. Browse the faculty pages to learn more about us. You will see that we explore a broad spectrum of religious traditions and cultures, east and west, ancient and modern as well as particular topics. An exciting article profiling our department was printed in the Los Angeles Times on May 27, 2001; click here to read it. Our undergraduate and graduate programs are described in some detail. For further information, please contact the appropriate faculty or staff. Take a look at our courses planned for the academic year and at This Week, our publication during the academic year describing lectures, colloquia, faculty and student activities, and other events. As you will see, we are a lively department! Catherine L. Albanese
