Position description

The Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in African American religious experience in the United States, to begin July 1, 2024. We welcome applications from scholars who research any aspect of the African American religious experience, with a preference for candidates who focus on one or more of the following: African American esotericism; ethno-racial traditions such as the Moorish Science Temple or the Nation of Islam; “slave religion” and early twentieth-century conjure/rootwork; race and ecology; abolitionist ethics and the carceral state; the religious dimensions of social movements, such as Black Lives Matter; the expressive religious culture of Afrofuturism; or the historical or contemporary Black church in North America. The department seeks candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, professional activity, and service. Candidates should be concerned with making contributions to method and theory in the study of religion. The successful candidate will contribute to the department’s undergraduate and graduate curriculum.

In 2023-24, a wide array of UC Santa Barbara departments is partnering with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to launch a special faculty recruitment initiative named after Benjamin Banneker, the 18th-century African-American mathematician, astronomer, anti-racist, engineer, ecologist, and peace advocate. Funded by an Advancing Faculty Diversity grant from the UC Office of the President, with the goal of diversifying faculty, research, and curriculum, the Banneker Initiative aims to recruit scholars, scientists, and engineers whose disciplinary and interdisciplinary work would take place within the community of interests exemplified by Banneker’s intellectual, ethical, and social commitments as an African American scientist. Applicants may be eligible to be fellows in the Benjamin Banneker Initiative. The community of Banneker Fellows will receive funding for cohort building and professional development activities, including enrollment in the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity Faculty Success Program, proposal writing training, and seed grants. Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at the time of application)
Applicants must have a Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) in religious studies or a related field OR have completed all requirements for a Ph.D., except the dissertation at the time of application.

Preferred Qualifications
Original and significant research; clarity of writing and argument; ability to collaborate with colleagues in the department and in related fields at UCSB; ability to add to diversity through teaching, mentorship, research, and service; and demonstrated knowledge of the subject in teaching and research area.
